Sulfate of cobalt represents crystal substance from pink till red color, salt of bivalent cobalt and sulphuric acid. It is very hygroscopic. Well (but slowly) it is dissolved in water. It is badly dissolved in ethanol, concentrated sulphuric acid, it is slightly better - in methanol and glycerin. It is recovered by sulfur, carbon, metal cobalt.
Anhydrous sulfate of cobalt (II) exists in two crystal modifications: α-CoSO4 pink color, has rhombic singoniya of crystal lattice and β-CoSO4 lilac color, has monoklinny singoniya of crystal lattice.
Sulfate of cobalt meets in the nature in the form of minerals of aplouit, moorhouseite and bieberite.
At sedimentation and at moisture absorption sulfate of cobalt (II) forms number of crystalline hydrates of solutions:
- CoSO4 heptahydrate • 7H2O - red crystals with monoklinny singoniya. Also two metastable modifications of heptahydrate - from rhombic and monoklinny singoniyama are known.
- hexahydrate of CoSO4 • 6H2O - orange-red crystals with monoklinny singoniya.
- monohydrate of CoSO4 • H2O - pink crystals with monoklinny singoniya.
Besides, metastable hydrates with 4 and 2 water molecules are known.
The most widespread type of sulfate of cobalt is heptahydrate of sulfate of cobalt.
Density: anhydrous 3,71 g/cm ³, monohydrate: 3,075 g/cm ³; hexahydrate: 2,029 g/cm ³; heptahydrate - 1,948 g/cm ³. Temperature of decomposition is 600-700 °C.
Chemical formula: CoSO4.
In the electrochemical industry, it is used as sushitel of lithographic ink, varnishes, paints and linoleum.
Besides, it can be used as the catalyst, analytical reactant, tire glue, etc.
Cobalt is considered irreplaceable element for live organisms, including people as it enters B12 vitamin molecule.
